Creating Art for Story with Sarah Mensinga

Date/Time
Date(s) - 07/10/2021
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

For some hot Summer 2021 illustration inspiration, SCBWI Arkansas is presenting a webinar with author/illustrator, Sarah Mensinga. A successful creator of children’s books and graphic novels, Sarah also has credits in the animation industry as character animator, character designer, and concept artist.

Sarah will be discussing her creative experiences, especially in the kidlit industry, and will share some of her processes for developing illustrations for her 2021 picture book and middle grade novel (interior art). She will also talk about working collaboratively with authors and art directors for a variety of projects.

This will be a 60-minute webinar with additional time for questions at the end.

Note: We will be offering one diversity scholarship to a BIPOC illustrator. Please contact Monica Clark-Robinson at arkansas-ra@scbwi.org for more info about the scholarship or to apply.

Portfolio Critiques

Sarah will also be offering a limited number of portfolio critiques, via email.  First-come-first-served!

Portfolios must be submitted by July 15, 2021. You can register for both the critique and the webinar, or the webinar only. Complete instructions for portfolio submissions will be emailed to critique registrants.

Bio

Sarah Mensinga is a Canadian who now lives in Texas with her husband and three kids. She has worked in the animation industry as an animator and concept artist: “These days, I’m illustrating, writing novels and picture books, and sometimes working in the animation industry.” Her artwork is represented by Shannon Associates.

She also once wrote an 800-page graphic novel that she likes to hide away on the internet, and she’s contributed to various comic anthologies, such as Flight 4 & Flight 5. She’s been writing stories of some sort or another since she was eight years old, and has been ruining movies for friends and family ever since by overthinking the plot.
